Former US President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100, as confirmed by the Carter Center. He died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family on December 29, 2024.

Carter was the longest-lived president in U.S. history, having celebrated his centenary just a few months prior in October.

Carter's presidency from 1977 to 1981 was marked by significant challenges, including economic difficulties and international crises.

However, he is perhaps best known for his post-presidential humanitarian efforts, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

His son, Chip Carter, described him as a "hero" who valued peace and human rights. In February 2023, Carter chose to enter hospice care after battling health issues, including melanoma that had metastasized.

His death marks the first presidential funeral since George H.W. Bush's in 2018, with plans for a state funeral announced for January 9, 2025, designated as a national day of mourning by President Biden.

Carter is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife Rosalynn passed away just a month before him after a marriage of 77 years.
